School nursing as a pillar of health care in basic education: the educational community's interpretation

Introduction: the integration of nursing professionals into educational institutions constitutes an emerging strategy in Paraguay to strengthen health promotion and prevention in school settings. However, few studies explore the interpretation that the educational community attributes to this role.
Objective: to understand the meanings and evaluations constructed by the educational community regarding the school nursing professional in a public institution in Pilar, Paraguay.
Method: a qualitative study with a single-case design and hermeneutic orientation. Fifteen school stakeholders participated, selected through purposive sampling. Open interviews and participant observation were used. Data analysis was performed using thematic coding with ATLAS.ti support and source triangulation.
Results: six categories emerged: Meanings attributed to the role, Impact on school practices, Institutional satisfaction, Tensions and challenges, Contributions to care management, and Professional functions. In the discourses of the category Meanings attributed to the role, a high valuation of the role predominated, associated with institutional need and daily utility. Meanwhile, in the Tensions and challenges category, tensions were identified mainly associated with thematic coverage and logistical conditions.
Conclusions: school nursing is configured as a strategic actor in building a health-promoting school. Its institutionalization could strengthen health equity and preventive management in the Paraguayan educational system.
