Abstract

Introduction: the professional development of rehabilitation professionals needs to be transformed through the development of kinesiological skills in the prevention, rehabilitation, and follow-up of patients with motor function impairments.

Objective: to develop a professional development strategy with actions that incorporate the content, skills, and exercises of the McKenzie Method.

Method: a mixed-methods research study was conducted in the municipality of Chambas, Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, from April 2023 to November 2024. Both theoretical and empirical methods were employed. The study population consisted of 35 graduates in Rehabilitation Medicine, and individual and group characteristics were considered in their selection. All participants provided informed consent to participate in the research. The study variable identified was the capacity and competence for the technical application of the McKenzie Method's kinesiological skills in the prevention, rehabilitation, and follow-up of patients with motor function impairments. This capacity and competence were assessed using ten indicators through observation, surveys, and interviews.

Results: methodological triangulation of the results showed that the studied variable had a low level in all ten analyzed indicators and demonstrated the need for a professional development strategy to enhance the kinesiological skills of the McKenzie Method.

Conclusions: the proposed professional development strategy outlines the content, skills, and exercises of the McKenzie Method and has received positive feedback from experts who endorse its potential effectiveness.
