Journal History

Revista Información Científica was the successor to the newsletter of the same name, which was published between 1982 and 1987. It is the color theme of the current design.

The first issue of Revista Información Científica was published in print in January 1991 at the Centro Provincial de Ciencias Médicas de Guantánamo (CPICM Gtmo). The founding editor was Lérida de la Caridad de la Torre Castillo (Pucha).

It obtained ISSN 1028-9933 on January 20, 1993. It was the sole and leading publication in the Guantánamo health sector, as it remains to this day, with the fundamental objective of responding to the growing demand for research among health professionals and technicians in the province.

In 1994, from the then Facultad de Ciencias Médicas Guantánamo, it began to be published in ASCII electronic format and edited in WordStar. It was distributed via email using lists compiled by information centers throughout the country and by CITMA.

Beginning in the first quarter of 1996, the journal began publishing in PDF format. In addition to email, its distribution was also carried out through the institutional website.

It was registered on April 10, 1997, with No. 1826 (now No. 2184) in the Registro Nacional de Publicaciones Seriadas. At that time, Infomed's management decided to integrate it into its website, becoming the first provincial journal to be included in this national online network.

In mid-2005, Revista Información Científica began publishing supplements and special issues dedicated to medical specialties and incorporated a section dedicated to Pedagogical Articles (2008).

In January 2009, it obtained the CITMA seal, being included in the Certification System for Scientific-Technological Serial Publications with code 0946308; the first to obtain this distinction in our province.

With the creation of the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Guantánamo and the reorganization of Infomed's services in 2010, necessary changes occurred at RIC, such as: restructuring of the Editorial Section, beginning the translation of its abstracts into English (2012), changing the frequency to bimonthly (2013), installing the Open Journal Systems v. 2.4.8 platform (2014), and publishing articles in HTML format (2014). All of this allowed for its indexing in Latindex (2015), considered the first step toward greater visibility for the journal.

During 2017, the OJS platform was hosted on Infomed's servers, achieving indexing in Dialnet and ERIHPlus (2017), SciELO, DOAJ, and Biblat (2018), as well as Redalyc and LILACS (2019). This past year, the translation of abstracts into Portuguese, the publication of new XML formats, the requirement for ORCID codes, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge on various social and academic networks began.

In 2020, RIC's digital identity policy was developed, with the redesign of the banner, the creation of a slogan, and bylaws for the design of graphics. The first steps were taken in adopting the Open Science philosophy. The use of the CRediT taxonomy began, and indexing in the Latindex 2.0 Catalog was achieved.

Content licensing under CC BY and the implementation of the single-volume continuous publication system took place in 2023, along with QR codes for each article and the incorporation of the ePUB format. A declaration of commitment to Open Science was also made (acceptance of preprints, availability of research data, and deposit in Zenodo and e-LIS repositories). The migration to OJS version 3.3.0-18 took place this year (2025).
