Abstract

A descriptive study was carried out to determine the behavior of preschool mortality in the Pedro A. Pérez Pediatric Hospital in Guantánamo from January 2003 to December 2011 (inclusive). Patients ages 1-4 years who died in the period that were studied. The variables age, sex, origin, main causes of death, parental schooling, living conditions and nutritional status were studied. It was found a higher incidence in preschoolers of 1 year of males and rural origin, constituting acute respiratory diseases and congenital anomalies that was the main causes of death. Insufficient schooling of parents, poor living conditions and poor nutritional status were found.
