Microbiological diagnosis of neonatal sepsis in Guantanamo’s General Teaching Hospital "Agostinho Neto"

Abstract

An investigation was carried out to establish the microbiological diagnosis of neonatal sepsis in the General Teaching Hospital "Agostinho Neto" from January 2008 to March 2010. The universe of study consisted of 111 neonates. Statistical summary techniques were applied at the descriptive level of research. Neonatal sepsis in the studied period had a decreasing behavior. The main risk factors of the mother were: cesarean delivery, preterm delivery, vaginal sepsis, neonatal-related outcomes were low birth weight, use of catheters, endotracheal tubes, prior antimicrobial use and assisted ventilation. The predominant germs were coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella spp.
