Abstract

A study was carried out to characterize the behavior of chagasic megacolon in the Ricardo Bacherer Integral Community Hospital, municipality Tarabuco, Bolivia. The universe coincided with the sample and was formed by the total number of patients admitted with a diagnosis of intestinal occlusion, fecaloma, and / or constipation, between January 2011 and January 2012. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, Diagnosis at admission, history of Chagas and treatment performed, among others. The data were extracted from the medical records and processed using conventional statistical techniques and the percentage as a summary measure and representing them in frequency distribution tables. Prevalence of males and individuals older than 60 years was found. Most were diagnosed with megacolon upon admission. The treatment indicated was correct in all cases. It is concluded that chagasic megacolon is a very frequent entity in this hospital.
