Abstract

The understanding by the health professionals of the premises of the Diagnosis and Prevention Program for genetic diseases and birth defects are fundamental pillars in the detection of individual-family risk and reduction of infant mortality. This review addresses the purposes and benefits of implementing this program in the country and the province of Guantánamo. The evolution of this program since its inception in 1981 was explained by our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, the incorporation of new subprograms and their current status. It outlines the objectives and requirements of each of the subprograms, pretending to be a tool to instruct newly trained professionals about the problems and events of the follow-up of the pregnant woman, determination of genetic risk in families, detection and management of genetic diseases.
