Characterization of diabetic retinopathy in the elderly

Abstract

A study was carried out in diabetic patients of the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto ", with the aim of determining the behavior of diabetic retinopathy in the elderly attended at the Ophthalmological Center of this hospital, from July to December 2012. The universe consisted of 138 patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus with a sample of 100 patients that was chosen and their relation to sex, race, age, clinical type of diabetes, treatment received, years of evolution and metabolic control were chosen. The presence of retinopathy was verified in 26% of the patients. Poor metabolic control and years of evolution were the variables that were most associated with the presence of this complication. Type I diabetics and those treated with insulin were the most affected.
