Abstract

A retrospective study of bacteremia in critically ill patients is presented in order to analyze the epidemiological and prognosis of this condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the General Teaching Hospital  "Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedraja" from 2011 to 2012. The universe of study consists of the total of patients discharged from the intensive care unit with the diagnosis of bacteremia. The following variables are analyzed: extrinsic risk factors, underlying diseases, germs, evolution and mortality where extrinsic risk factors more common in the universe under study were the intravascular catheter, urinary catheter and surgical wound. The main underlying diseases in the studied patients were: the AVE, the adult respiratory distress and COPD. The primary isolates germs were: Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and acinectobacter. Sepsis, the systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis syndrome were the most frequent clinical forms and bacteremia mortality was high.
