Abstract

An analytical study of cases and controls was carried out with the objective of identifying the risk factors that influence the incidence of hip fracture in patients treated at the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto "of Guantánamo in 2010. The universe was constituted by all patients 50 years or more who suffered trauma or fall. The variables studied were: age group, gender, personal pathological history, maternal history of hip fracture, toxic habits, medication consumption, institutionalization, body weight and physical inactivity. Absolute and relative frequencies, Odds Ratio (OR) and X2 were calculated. Statistically significant results were considered when the confidence interval (95%) did not include the value 1 and p <0.05. It was concluded that the risk factors that significantly influenced the occurrence of hip fractures were: benzodiazepine consumption, low body weight and physical inactivity.
