Abstract

We review the medical records of 6 patients with chronic non-invasive fungal maxillary rhinosinusitis belonging at the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto "from Guantánamo in the period between January 2010 and December 2011, with the objective of evaluating: clinical picture, imaging results, surgical and histopathological findings to determine the diagnostic category and the results of follow-up at discharge. In the clinical picture of these patients, no differences were found regarding other chronic rhinosinusal diseases. The images of calcifications and signs of sinus expansion mass seen in the computerized axial tomography made the disease suspicious. The sole pathogen turned out to be aspergillus and is isolated by histopathology in 4 patients. Five patients were diagnosed in the category of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and one in a fungal or mycetoma ball, all evaluated satisfactorily during follow-up after hospital discharge.
