Abstract

A study was carried out in 55 patients diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (PR) in the elderly with the objective of determining clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the disease in 2010. The data are obtained from the patients' medical history and the yearbook provincial. To summarize the information, the number, percentage and rates are used as a summary measure, representing it in frequency distribution tables, association data and graphs. Among the most relevant results is that 34.6% is 60-69 years in males, autosomal recessive inheritance predominated in typical retinitis pigmentosa, in addition to opacity of the lens in both eyes, visual acuity less than 0.05 obtained the largest number of patients in both eyes and the municipality of Guantánamo is the highest rate. The visual deterioration of patients with retinitis pigmentosa in the elderly is demonstrated. Retinitis pigmentation screening is recommended for the early detection of elderly patients.
