Introduction: oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of Stomatology that includes dental surgical treatment, where the alveoli are exposed and injured. Alveolitis is an infectious process after tooth extraction, it is painful and affects the patient's evolution.
Objective: to describe the prevalence of alveolitis as a post-dental surgery complication.
Method: a bibliographic review of scientific articles from the PubMed database that met the selection criteria was carried out and through the use of keywords: Alveolitis, Alveolar Osteitis, Dental Extraction, Extraction, Oral Surgery (Alveolitis, Alveolar Osteitis, Tooth Extraction, Exodontia, Oral Surgery).
Results: of a total of 91 articles, 10 were selected after an evaluation and discard process. There is a prevalence of post-extraction alveolitis that ranges from 1.06% to 73.3%, while in third molars the prevalence varies between 2.5% and 23.1%.
Conclusions: there is a high prevalence of alveolitis as a post-dental surgery complication, often caused by factors such as smoking, the use of oral contraceptives, suppression of the immune system and traumatic extractions. It is very common in the extraction of third molars and dry socket is more common than wet socket in females.
