Abstract

Introduction: ranula is a pseudocyst that manifests as a soft sublingual or submandibular swelling. Objective: describe different alternatives for the treatment of ranula and their effectiveness. Method: a non-experimental and qualitative study was carried out. To obtain the data, the PubMed, SciELO and Mendeley websites were used during the months of December 2022 to February 2023. A total of 24 articles were obtained. The bibliographic selection instrument was the review of articles, articles no more than five years old, updated research on the treatment, epidemiology and diagnosis of ranula, free access articles that had a relevant contribution to this research and articles that were found in Spanish and English. The search terms used: “Ránula”, “ranula treatment”, “ranula treatment”, with the Boolean operator AND. After subjecting these texts to the selection criteria, 17 articles were obtained as a final sample. Results: within the articles investigated, a higher percentage of recurrence was evident in treatments for ranula using marsupialization, with a percentage of 37-100% of cases with recurrence. Ranula excision without sublingual gland showed 25-56.69% recurrence, agent OK-432 showed less recurrence rate with 12.5-49% compared to bleomycin with 78% recurrence. Conclusions: one of the treatment methods for the elimination of ranula is marsupialization, however, as it is highly recurrent, different alternatives have been used, including the use of sclerosing agents, showing a certain degree of recurrence of this pathology. Excision of the ranula together with the sublingual gland is used, especially in recurrent cases, in which a complete absence of recurrence is noted.
