Abstract

Introduction: obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome during pregnancy is a disorder specialized in recurrent venous and arterial thromboembolic events or morbidities during pregnancy. Objective: to characterize the obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome and its prevalence in Ecuador, in the period 2020-2022. Method: qualitative and quantitative study is carried out. The research population included all pregnant women in Ecuador in the period 2020-2022 and who had a diagnosis of obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome or diseases related to it. Several numerical variables were addressed, such as age; the data were obtained from the Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). Scientific articles published in SciELO, medical journals, medical books and degree works were consulted. Results: the investigation showed that the province of Pichincha, with 26%, has the highest number of cases of obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome, where 605 cases are registered nationwide. Within the study population, inclusion criteria were applied, with the disease being more present mainly in pregnant women, with age being a key factor, in the age range between 20-24 and 30-34 years. The prevalence of the disease was shown to be 8.63% among the aforementioned age range, that is, for every 1,000 pregnant women, 9 women suffer from obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome or a related disease. Conclusions: obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome affects women of childbearing age and is the main cause of recurrent abortions, most of which occur after ten weeks. The high risk record of preterm birth is related to this obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome.
