Abstract

A descriptive study was done to determine the factors that alter the quality of water in the hemodialysis unit at the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto "in Guantanamo, in 2006, the risk to patients. The study group consists on 142 water samples from hemodialysis and 112 environmental samples animate and inanimate in this unit. The densities of heterotrophic bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are regulated. The sources of water pollution were identified. The results indicate the factors that alter the quality of water, such as the inappropriate use of gloves, inefficient handwashing, the violated time, disinfection and other procedures performed by nursing staff.
