Abstract

A study is performed in order to understand the behavior of those infections related to vascular access in the Nephrology Department of the General Teaching Hospital, "Dr Agostinho Neto" from January 2010 to December 2013 .The following variables were studied: type of vascular access, type of infection, causative organisms, culture results and complications of vascular access. The information was collected through forms of emptying of medical records, predominating infections in patients with transient vascular access. The most common gram-positive bacteria, the predominant complication was bacteremia and cases with arteriovenous fistula. The presence of sepsis was significantly lower. The results are compared with revised bibliographies allowing reaching conclusions and making recommendations.
