Abstract

In the hemodialysis service at the General Teaching Hospital Dr. "Agostinho Neto", Guantánamo, high incidence of sepsis was observed in the double-lumen catheter, which led to a prospective and descriptive study to evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotic solution and sealed with heparin to reduce sepsis in dual-lumen catheters. The universe consisted of 9 patients with dual lumen catheter implanted in service from April 2014. The variables were investigated: age, region of implementation, functionality of the catheter causes of change. 56 % of patients were 60 years and over, 45 % of catheters were implanted in the jugular region, 89 % of them worked properly. Only one was removed for sepsis. It was concluded that the sealing solution with antibiotic was effective, helped reduce sepsis and lengthen the average life of the catheter.
