Abstract

A study of cases and controls, in Kingston, Jamaica is done during the period 2010-2012, with the aim of establishing the association of selected risk factors in the onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy in type II diabetics, sample of 72 144 was taken wrongly. The variables involved were: age, sex, duration of disease, glycemic status, cholesterol, blood pressure, and level of knowledge of diabetic disease. It is used as a primary source and a secondary form medical history of patients. Females and the age groups 30-39 years, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79. They were identified as risk factors for high statistical significance, the duration of the disease, glycemic control, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes education no. The knowledge of the regularity of the above risk factors can act on them with the intention of achieving behavioral changes in patients to provide them with better visual and quality of life. It is necessary to implement the program of promotion and prevention of eye care in this community.
