Abstract

Introduction: Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infect human epithelial cells, and their replication cycle is associated with epithelial differentiation. More than 200 HPV genotypes have been identified, each showing distinct tissue and infection specificity.

Objective: to characterize the behavior of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in the population of individuals under 25 years of age worldwide, using data from epidemiological and clinical studies available in the scientific literature.

Method: a systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA method in articles published in the period 2016-2020, in the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, the search was carried out in the period from November 2023 to January 2024 using the search form: ((human papillomavirus OR HPV) AND (prevalence OR epidemiology OR incidence OR distribution)) AND (young people OR adolescents OR minors 25 years).

Results: the significant prevalence of HPV in those under 25 years of age and underlines the need to understand the behavioral and neural implications associated with this infection.

Conclusions: the available evidence suggests that the perception of risks and losses associated with HPV infection in those under 25 years of age is influenced by a complex neural network, which integrates biological, emotional and economic factors. Understanding these mechanisms can inform effective HPV prevention, detection and treatment strategies, as well as promote sexual and reproductive health in this age group.
