Abstract

Introduction: malaria is a parasitic disorder caused by the existence of the Plasmodium parasite in red blood cells. Among the indirect causes of maternal death, malaria is responsible for 25% of total deaths. It has a high incidence rate and represents a public health issue in Angola, being seen as the main cause of morbidity and mortality in children, adults and pregnant women.

Objective: determine the incidence of malaria among pregnant women treated at the Lunda-Sul maternity hospital in the first quarter of 2023.

Method: observational, cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive research. The population was made up of 1,004 pregnant women between 15 and 30 years old who were tested for malaria, with 319 of them positive. The following were the variables studied: areas of origin, age, pregnancy, malaria test positivity and month of the year. The data were processed in Microsoft Excel 2020

Results: the incidence of the disease recorded during the study was 31.7%. 58.6% of pregnant women come from peripheral urban areas; 10.5% belong to peripheral areas of the province of Lunda-Sul. The age range of 21 to 25 years turned out to be the most predominant, with a percentage of 34.4%. During the month of February, the highest number of cases was recorded.

Conclusions: malaria infection during pregnancy is a matter that demands numerous care and rapid and effective intervention, given that it is a circumstance that threatens risk to both the mother and the fetus.
