Introduction: it is the practice of using medications without the supervision of a health professional.
Objective: to analyze the health implications of self-medication in nursing staff through a systematic review of available evidence.
Method: a systematic review was conducted on self-medication in nursing staff, based on scientific evidence published in indexed databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Trip Medical Database and British Medical Journal (BMJ), in the period 2019-2024. The systematic review followed a series of rigorous methodological steps set out in the PRIAUTOMEDICACIÓN 2020 statement, taking into account inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics ranged from 7.3 % to 85.59 %, with an overall prevalence of 42.64 %. Prevalence rates differed considerably between countries and study subjects. The common cold, sore throat, fever, gastrointestinal tract diseases and respiratory diseases were the common self-medication diseases. The most commonly used antibiotic for self-medication was amoxicillin, followed by macrolides (azithromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin), cephalosporins and metronidazole.
Conclusions: there are different ways to communicate to the population the serious effects that self-medication can produce, as well as the demands of the government, the Public Health Directorate, through pharmacists, social workers, and communicators, for to eradicate the challenge of self-medication in this region.
