Introduction: halitosis is a reason for consulting a primary care doctor. It is a frequent symptom of multiple dental diseases, but a differential diagnosis must be considered with other diseases, some of them severe, that also cause it. Objective: systematize theoretical aspects about halitosis. Method: a bibliographic review was carried out based on previous research and articles that allow obtaining and compiling information for the development of the article. The systematic review is part of secondary research, which is based on the study of the available evidence on a specific intervention, with the aim of answering specific questions such as: definition of halitosis, risk factors, possible treatments, preventive measures. Results: oral health is an essential component of an individual's overall health and well-being, influencing not only physical fitness, but also self-esteem, communication and social relationships. Health promotion aims to improve the quality of life of the population. 30% of the population suffers from the disease. Final considerations: it can occur at any age in a human being's life, whether in men or women. Once the person has halitosis, it can be identified if it is coming from extraoral sources such as hepatitis, alcohol consumption, smoking; or on the other hand and with greater prevalence, intraoral ones, in which the coating of the tongue or periodontal disease intervenes. There are numerous treatments and measures for its control and elimination that must be individualized due to its multi-causal nature.
