Abstract

Introduction: in recent years, breastfeeding has had a decrease in its practice due to various factors, including the persuasion of health personnel to achieve the necessary information where the benefits of breastfeeding and the consequences of not doing it are explained. Objective: to establish the benefits of breastfeeding for the correct development of the upper jaw. Method: a systematic review of bibliographic sources was carried out with the collection of 15 scientific articles from databases such as SciELO, Pubmed, Scopus, based on the advantages of breastfeeding over artificial breastfeeding in dentomaxillofacial development, oral development, maxillary alterations and the relationship between breastfeeding and transverse micrognathism. Results: it is established that the breastfeeding that the baby performs by sucking the mother's breast allows its mouth to expand and acquire the shape where the jaw and teeth are in the correct position, which allows the development of the upper jaw. Due to the activity carried out by the baby when sucking with the help of its tongue, maxilla and jaw, it leads to muscle activity, oral stimulation and sensitivity, as well as the timely change to gradual solid foods, which stimulates growth. and future strengthening of the oral cavity with the prevention of pathologies at the level of the jaw and maxilla, such as malocclusions. Conclusions: transversal micrognathism affects more children who received artificial breastfeeding or did not complete a minimum of six months of breastfeeding.
