Abstract

A study was performed on 80 children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of "Hospital Pedro Agustin Perez"Guantanamodiagnosed with severe pneumonia from 2011 to2012, inorder to describe the behavior of the disease. The primary data was obtained by the review of medical records. Age groups, sex, origin, nutritional status, symptoms and signs that motivated admission and chest X-ray, taken into account complications, isolated germs and antibiotic therapy. Pneumonia in childrenPreSchoolwas severed and predominated male with urban origin. 21.2 % of children were malnourished by default. Fever, tachypnea and cough were the predominant clinical manifestations. Lobar radiopacity was the radiographic pattern observed by doctors. The microbiological diagnosis had a high percentage of negativity being the most isolated pneumococcus germ. Intrapulmonary complications and pleuritis were the most frequent. In 65.8 % of patients combination therapy was used
